The one who wants it more

At first, it looks balanced.

They both laugh.

They both reach.

They both say “we.”

It feels even.

Then something small happens.

He goes quiet.

She asks what’s wrong.

He shrugs.

She tries again.

Not dramatic.

Just a small leaning.

After arguments, she texts first.

Not because she’s guilty.

Because she hates the distance.

He replies when he’s ready.

She calls it patience.

He calls it space.

When plans change, she rearranges.

When tone sharpens, she softens hers.

When he pulls back, she steps forward.

Not loudly.

Not resentfully.

Just enough to keep the line from snapping.

He never asks her to bend.

That’s the elegance of it.

He simply doesn’t need to.

Over time, she becomes fluent in repair.

He becomes fluent in absence.

They still say they’re equal.

And technically, they are.

No one made rules.

No one signed anything.

But one of them learned that love meant adjusting first.

And the other learned they didn’t have to.

No one broke the rule.

They just followed it too well.
